When one file is the right call
- The form has one upload field. Common, and the most frequent reason people need this. Two documents, one slot.
- You're emailing an application. One clean attachment beats two, and it can't be half-forwarded.
- You want the reading order fixed. Letter, then resume, in that order, every time.
When to send them separately
- The form has separate fields for resume and cover letter. Use them — some systems parse the resume field specifically, and burying your resume behind a letter in that field can confuse it.
- You're sending only the resume. Plenty of applications don't want a letter, and attaching one unasked isn't a plus.
If in doubt and the form gives you two fields, use two files.
How to do it
- Open the resume from your resumes.
- Make sure the cover letter exists and reads the way you want.
- Choose the combined download option.
You get one PDF: the letter, then the resume, both in their own designs.
Good to know
- The combined file uses whatever designs each document is currently on. If they don't match, the combined PDF won't either. See choosing a cover letter design.
- Check the file before sending. The preview is accurate, but it's a thirty-second check on something you only send once.
