Your letter is drafted from two things: the facts already in your resume, and that resume's target job. Nothing else goes in.
Grounded, same as everything else
The anti-fabrication rule applies here in full. The draft can only use experience, skills, and results you've already written into your resume. It won't add a company you didn't work at, a skill you didn't list, or an achievement you didn't claim.
That has a practical consequence worth knowing: a thin resume produces a thin letter. If your bullets are vague, the letter has vague material to work with. Fill in the resume first and the letter improves for free.
Why we're strict about this: we never invent your experience.
With a target job
This is where it gets good. With the posting added, the draft can connect specific things you've done to specific things the role asks for — which is what a cover letter is actually for.

Without a target job
It still works. You get a solid general or speculative letter — the kind you'd send with a cold approach or a referral — and a nudge suggesting you add the job.
It's a nudge, not a block. We won't refuse to draft your letter because you haven't pasted a posting. Voice defaults to a polished register when we don't know who's reading.
Voice and size
The AI controls let you pick a voice (a short description of how it should sound) and a size by shape (Note is short and tight; Letter draws more from a strong resume), then re-draft. Those choices apply to the next draft only. They are not saved on the letter.
A Note stays short. A Letter grows when your resume has real substance to draw on. A warmer voice still invents nothing about you.
Then rewrite it
Treat the draft as scaffolding. It gets the structure and the facts right so you can spend your time on the part that matters — the paragraph explaining why this role, which only you can write honestly.
Every word is editable. Nothing is locked.
If you change the target job
The letter re-tailors to the new role. If you'd made manual edits you want to keep, copy them somewhere before re-drafting.
